Mount Maunganui (Mauou)
The resort town of Mount Maunganui is situated across the harbour from Tauranga. It hosts ‘New Zealand’s Best Beach’ alongside bustling streets, and of course, Mauao – the mountain that towers above it all. Mauao, or The Mount as it’s known by locals, is an extinct volcano standing 232m above sea level. The peninsula upon which the town sits is actually a sandbar, with a peaceful, sheltered beach on the inner harbour side and a beautiful surf beach on the side of the Pacific. Extremely popular among surfers of all abilities, there’s plenty of space for all to enjoy, with generous swells consistent throughout the year.
Mauao, which translates from Maori to ‘caught by the dawn,’ has assumed sacred status among locals. The steep climb to the summit of the Mount will take around 40 minutes – but it’s worth the effort, with stunning 360° views of expansive ocean, coastline and Tauranga’s harbour.
Similar to Tauranga, the town of Mount Maunganui is a hotspot for nature lovers and thrill seekers alike. With stretches of white sand and clear ocean as far as the eye can see, choose to indulge in some relaxation by the beach, or get active with one of the endless activities on offer. Mount Maunganui has seen a boom in recent years, with cafes, bars and restaurants popping up in abundance, meaning you’ll never have to eat in the same place twice. In addition, you’ll find some of the best boutique shopping that New Zealand has to offer, including specialist clothing, gifts, souvenirs and contemporary and fine art.
Mount Maunganui is the holiday destination to keep the whole family happy!
